How are retail prices collected?
Prices are collected from the online platforms of major Italian supermarket chains with national distribution such as Interspar, Spazio Conad, Famila, Lidl Italia, MD, Coop, and PAM Panorama.
Why does GIPIG use the median price instead of the average?
The median is preferred over the arithmetic mean because retail price distributions are heavily skewed by aggressive promotional discounts and premium variants. The median provides a more stable and representative reference price. Full methodology at
